Design

Conceptual, Basic, Value and Detailed Engineering

Our engineering team includes all the different specialties (mechanical, electrical, civil, I&C and performance) in order to develop conceptual, basic, value, and detailed design of the complete solar power plants. The design is made following general instructions and target set by our clients like generation maximizing, season focus, project execution shortens, etc.

engineering stages

Each Stage has his Own Solution

Conceptual Engineering

What. The purpose is to design according to the Client’s requirements a plant to maximize the LCOE / LCOS or whatever other target has been set by the Client. (capacity, footprint, yield, etc.)

When. Feasibility studies and tender phases

How. Defining several scenarios with different equipment and configurations and performing software simulations of the plant’s performance to accurately calculate generation/energy throughput. At the same time, a basic electrical, mechanical, civil, and I&C design is made to assess the cost and constructability of the plant. A basic financial model is used to evaluate each scenario LCOE / LCOS and determine the best case.

Deliverables.

  • LCOE / LCOS Comparison table
  • All cases software simulations
  • Best case design book
  • Best case layout
  • Best case SLD

Basic Engineering

What. After the best case is defined through the Conceptual Engineering, drawings, calculations, and specifications are developed during this stage to get a more accurate costing and schedule.

When. After the project is found viable, according to the feasibility study, an investment decision is firm in case of self-developed projects. After a project is awarded in a competitive tender process.

How. All the main equipment are defined for the particular case. All other major engineering specialties are further developed: layouts, electrical configuration, civil main actions (trenches, roads, earth movements, etc.), instrumentation and control scheme, etc. and reflected in drawings, SLDs, design books, etc. Mein equipment specifications, as well as plant BOQs, are developed for costing purposes.

Deliverables.

  • Design book including design conditions and site conditions
  • Energy report with simulation parameters used and hourly generation
  • Main equipment (modules, mounting structure, inverter station and cabling) definition and technical specifications
  • Electrical configuration report including string sizing, cabling sizing and LV, MV and DC SLDs
  • Main characteristics of the monitoring and security systems
  • Civil general design including foundation design, leveling, roads, fencing and buildings
  • General Preliminary Layout with the position of the main equipment, roads, buildings, substation, cable routing, fences and security and monitoring system
  • Interconnection facility preliminary design including scheme and SLD
  • PV Plant BOQs

Value Engineering

What. Improvement of the configuration that in previous stages has been found as the optimum one (best case). It usually consists of finetuning the best case configuration but it can also imply major changes that make the design not compliant with specifications and require value for money negotiations with the specifications’ ruler.

When. Advanced development phase before financial closure.

How. Thoroughly analyzing each variable and each specification used to define the best case and the changes that could be implemented, assessing the improvement of the target in each case, compared with the best one.

Deliverables.

  • Updated LCOE / LCOS Comparison table
  • Updated best case deliverables
  • Changes in the specifications, if any, including justification and supporting documents dossier
  • Support service with specification ruler negotiations

Detailed Engineering

What. It is meant to further develop the final construction design. Main parameters and equipment are defined in detail at this stage and main specialties packages (mechanical, civil, electrical, I&C, HCIS, etc.) are developed to be sent to main subcontractors and get accurate quotations.

When. Once the design is considered final and execution phase starting.

How. Complete plant detailed engineering for construction. It can be done for all the single elements of the plant or by specialty (civil, electrical, mechanical and I&C) packages. In this second case, each subcontractor will develop the detailed engineering for his specialty.

Deliverables.

Complete set of specifications, drawings, studies, reports, SLDs, schedules, surveys, documents, etc. in different versions for all the specialties according to the Engineering Deliverables List (EDL) as per the below scheme:

Standalone Engineering Activities

What. Can be a part of the plant design engineering like a layout, a generation study, pull out test protocol, bill of quantities, etc.

When. Any stage of the engineering phase.

How. Inputs from previous steps have to be provided by the Client

Deliverables. Depending of the activity can be an specifications, drawings, studies, reports, SLDs, schedules, surveys, documents, etc
